Backup & disaster recovery

Recover on a timeline you have already tested.

Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace backup, image-based server backup, endpoint backup, immutable copies and recovery in the cloud. Santre backs up what matters and proves it restores before you ever need it.

We check coverage, immutability and restore history, then test one restore.

Overview

Backup, Disaster Recovery & Business Continuity

Santre's backup and disaster recovery service protects Canadian businesses against data loss, ransomware and site outages. It includes Microsoft 365 and Google Workspace backup, image-based server and workstation backup, immutable or offline backup copies, backup as a service (BaaS), disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS) and business continuity planning. The difference from basic backup is testing: Santre restores data on a schedule and records the results so recovery time and recovery point objectives are known, not assumed.

Who it is for

  • Businesses that assume Microsoft 365 backs up their data
  • Organizations whose insurer asks about immutable or offline backups
  • Companies that cannot afford days of downtime
  • Teams with backups that have never been test-restored

What’s included

Backup is the copy. Recovery is the plan.

Cloud and SaaS backup

Independent copies of email, files and Teams data, kept outside the platform they came from.

  • Microsoft 365 backup
  • Google Workspace backup
  • Point-in-time and item-level restore
  • Retention aligned to legal and business needs

Server and endpoint backup

Image-based backups that can bring back a single file or an entire machine.

  • Image-based server backup
  • Workstation and laptop backup
  • Local appliances for fast restore
  • Backup monitoring and daily reporting

Ransomware resilience

Backups attackers cannot encrypt or delete, even with stolen administrator credentials.

  • Immutable and offline backup copies
  • Separate backup credentials and MFA
  • Ransomware recovery runbooks
  • Cyber-insurance backup evidence
How it works

Immutable copies are written to storage with retention locks, where they are offered by the backup platform in use, so a backup cannot be shortened or deleted until its retention expires. Backup administration uses accounts separate from the domain so a compromised domain admin cannot reach it.

Disaster recovery and continuity

Run critical systems somewhere else while the primary site is restored.

  • Disaster recovery as a service (DRaaS)
  • Recovery time and recovery point objectives
  • Business continuity planning
  • Scheduled restore tests and tabletop exercises

When to consider it

Signs it is time to act

  • You have never restored a full server from backup
  • No one can say how long recovery would take
  • Microsoft 365 data is not backed up outside Microsoft
  • Your insurer asked whether backups are immutable or offline
  • Backups run on the same network and credentials as everything else

How Santre delivers it

A clear process from first review to ongoing care

  1. Inventory

List systems and data, then set recovery time and recovery point objectives for each.

  2. Protect

Deploy backup for cloud, servers and endpoints with immutable or offline copies.

  3. Test

Restore files and full systems on a schedule and record the actual recovery times.

  4. Plan

Write and rehearse the continuity plan: who does what, in which order, when systems are down.

Scope

Technologies and boundaries

Platforms commonly in scope

  • Microsoft 365 backup platforms
  • Image-based backup appliances
  • Immutable cloud object storage
  • DRaaS platforms
  • Endpoint backup agents

Cybersecurity works to prevent an incident; this service makes sure you can recover from one. Managed IT watches backup job status day to day; restore testing, DR design and continuity plans are owned here.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about Backup & Recovery

Microsoft keeps the service available and offers limited recycle-bin and retention features. It does not provide the independent, long-term, point-in-time copies a backup service does. A separate Microsoft 365 backup protects against accidental deletion, malicious deletion and ransomware.

Backup is a copy of your data. Disaster recovery is the ability to bring systems back into service — on what hardware, in what order and how quickly. You can have backups and still be down for days without a recovery plan.

Recovery time objective (RTO) is how long a system can be down. Recovery point objective (RPO) is how much recent data you can afford to lose. Setting them per system decides the backup frequency and recovery method each one needs.
